Louis II, the German

Louis II, the German (804?-876) is often regarded as the founder of the German kingdom. After the death of his father, Louis I, in 840, he joined with one brother, Charles the Bald, to fight another, Lothair I, for control of the empire. The Treaty of Verdun in 843 gave Louis all of Germany east of the Rhine River.
