Marquess

Marquess, << MAHR kwihs, >> is a degree of nobility in the British peerage. A marquess, also spelled marquis, ranks higher than an earl or a baron, and second only to a duke. The name marquess once meant the ruler of an outlying province. A marquess’s wife is a marchioness.
